Hello! I write about the stories we inherit and how we rewrite them, on the page or in our lives, and how we can be more free. My new book is called Chopping Onions on my Heart in most places and Always Carry Salt in the US and it’s about my mother tongue, the language of Iraqi Jews, about losing and saving culture and heritage, keeping and letting go. It is shortlisted for the Wingate Award.

My other books are my reading memoir How to be a Heroine and Take Courage, a biography of Anne Brontë. I also write plays like my rom com How to Date a Feminist which has been performed all over the world.

I worked on the first two Paddington films.

I’m the daughter of Iraqi Jewish refugees, and I live in London with my son.

Find me on instagram or substack or contact me here. I’m always really happy to hear from readers and audiences.
