Hello! I write about the stories we inherit, what we do with them and how we rewrite them, on the page or in our lives. My latest book is called Chopping Onions on my Heartin most places and Always Carry Saltin the US and it’s about my mother tongue, the language of Iraqi Jews, going extinct, about losing and saving culture and heritage, keeping and letting go. It is shortlisted for the Wingate Award.

My other books are my reading memoir How to be a Heroine and Take Courage, a biography of Anne Brontë. I also write plays like my rom com How to Date a Feminist which has been performed all over the world.

I worked on the first two Paddington films.

I’m the daughter of Iraqi Jewish refugees, and I live in London with my son.

I have taught writing and mentored writers at Arvon, the Jewish Literary Foundation, the University of Westminster, the Edinburgh Book Festival and other places.
