I write books and plays. Chopping Onions on my Heart: on losing and preserving culture is out now, published by Chatto & Windus, and is a memoir about my mother tongue, the language of the Jews of Iraq, going extinct, and about what we keep and save, and what we let go of. It will be published in the US, by Pegasus Books, in 2026 under the title Always Carry Salt.

Chatto & Windus also published my reading memoir How to be a Heroine, or what I’ve learned from reading too much, and my biography of Anne Brontë, Take Courage: Anne Brontë and the Art of Life.

My rom com play How to Date a Feminist has been produced all over the world and is published by Nick Hern Books along with my other plays Cling to me Like Ivy and I’m Still Burning.

I have been a MacDowell Fellow and chair of judges for the Jewish Quarterly Wingate Award.

The daughter of Iraqi Jewish refugees, I live in London.
